Dead until Dark, Charlaine Harris. Book Review #1

Well as promised months ago here is a book review, I have quite a few of these to do! So here is the first, I hope you don't mind and bare with me I'm sure my reviews will improve the more I write, until then enjoy.
Dead Until Dark, -Charlaine Harris.
Synopsis:
Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much -not because she's not pretty -she's a very cute and bubbly Blonde - or not interested in a social life. She really is but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too date-able. And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's fussy about his food, he doesn't like suntans and he's never around during the day.. Yep, Bill's a vampire. Worse than that he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd with a reputation for trouble- of the murderous kind. And then one of Sookie's colleagues at the bar is killed, and it's beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim... (blurb)

Most of you will most likely be familiar with the HBO series True Blood, well this is where it started as The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris this is the first novel in the series and it is where I and many others fell in love with the 'Sookieverse'. The first novel isn't packed with excitement like the other novels but it does have quite a lot. This book introduces you to life in Bon Temps and the rest of Louisiana now that the vampires are out of the coffin, this book revolves around getting to know the world in which humans and vampires live side by side and finding out what other supernatural creatures may be lurking in the dark. We also have a murderer on the loose which isn't good for Bon Temps. Aside from a murderer on the loose Sookie has to deal with vampire business and starts to learn that dating a vampire may not be all that peachy. I personally find the book light hearted and slightly amusing in some parts but most of all I love the characters.  I love how we learn about the characters and as the series continues we get more and more attached to each one. I think this is a fab start to an amazing series of books. I recommend it to anyone who likes something a little different or a love story with an edge. I don't class it as a love story overall I'd say that is just part of the plot the main plot revolves around a mystery, who is murdering these women? If you watch True Blood but haven't read the books yet, you may be slightly disappointed since Alan Ball changed pretty much everything but if you can avoid comparing it to the series its fantastic. Well worth a read.

If you want a series you can go back to again and again and enjoy more and more this is one for you, be warned though these vampires do not sparkle and live off human blood. And not all of them are nice. This book with make you laugh, it will make you 'ship' people and it may make you shed a tear or two. I know the first time I read it I had a small tear or three. This must be the 30th time I've read this book and it never gets old.
Stars out of 5? ★★★★
