A little bit of a different post about a place called Escomb

This is one thing I love about Escomb the church is surrounded by a wall that only tall people can see over properly and its grounds are filled with trees which makes it stand out. Its as if its been built that way to keep people from looking in.

Escomb is one of my favourite places to visit, its where my Granda grew up and its such a beautiful place so we're regular visitors. The place is just a short drive outside of Bishop Auckland, and its home to Escomb Church which is somewhat famous. Its known as one of Europes most complete Saxon Churches  and its the oldest complete Saxon Church in the UK!
Build in c. 670-675, so you can imagine its age! Its mainly stone from a Roman Fort in Binchester, its beautiful. To visit the church you need to go to the Vicars house which is just out the back, collect the keys and let yourself in, there's a little notice board outside the church to tell you all you need to know. The church is so interesting though, so much history, so of the graves are dated as far back as 1720! I'm sure there are older ones but those aren't readable, and then the Anglo-Saxon ones well I can't really understand them haha.
The photos are all mine, some were taken a couple of weeks ago when we had all the sunshine and some are from last summer. I'm sorry theres not as many photos of inside the Church as outside but its hard to get them due to such poor lighting.
If you want to know more about the church visit the Churches website.
Not only is there the wonderful church in Escomb but just a five minute walk away is a wonderful river to catch fish and a pond with geese. Theres also a little pub where you can stop for a bite to eat before leaving. It's really an Adorable place, one of my favourites to visit, so beautiful and so much history.

Have you been to Escomb before?
